The Core Difference: FDA Approval
The most important difference between Ozempic and Wegovy is their FDA-approved indication. Ozempic is approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes and to reduce cardiovascular risk. Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition.
Both use the same active ingredient (semaglutide) at similar weekly injection schedules, but the approved dose ranges differ. Wegovy's maximum approved dose (2.4mg/week) is higher than Ozempic's (2.0mg/week).
This matters because doctors can only prescribe each medication for its approved indication—or off-label, which affects insurance coverage.
